It may be impossible to trace the different types of dogs that make up the Cur, but one thing is certain: it’s a very tough and dependable dog whether it is in the wild and wooded areas of the mountains or in the dry or swampy areas of the plains. The Mountain Cur is a versatile and durable dog. The dogs have proven their mettle when it came to herding flock that the Pioneers brought with them in their westward migration. When the Pioneers started heading westwards, perhaps because of the lure of gold in the western shores of the new country, they brought with them their Mountain Curs mainly as herders. Big mistake for the small animal as once it has climbed a tree the Mountain Cur will already be at the base patiently waiting for its human master to take down the game.īut the Mountain Cur was not only proven effective in the dense forests of the Southern Mountains. It is for this reason that the Mountain Cur is well-regarded as a treeing and trailing dog, more than capable of following the trail of small game as they scurry through the thick shrubs of the forest floor before heading up to the trees. The dogs were also used in hunting game, especially prey that climbed trees like raccoons and squirrels. Pioneers used these dogs to guard their family as well as their belongings and property. It is also possible that other European dogs were mated to native Indian Curs, most especially the Beauceron, to give the Mountain Cur its remarkable herding abilities. The hounds provided the Curs with exceptional scenting abilities while terriers gave them tenacity and grit. The initial lines are all over the Appalachian Mountains. Many dog aficionados consider the Mountain Cur as the first American purebred. It’s a sordid combination, but one that produced an off-beat kind of dog that was fully capable of adjusting to the ways of life of both the Pioneers and the native Indians. These European dogs were mated with Indian Curs. Let’s learn more about the enigmatic Mountain Cur.Įuropean immigrants brought with them scent hounds and terriers when they moved to the United States and settled in the mountainous regions of Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, and Kentucky sometime in the 18th century. This American breed has been around longer than many of the more popular ones, always working for its family and cherishing every moment it spends with them.

We’re pretty sure this is also the first time you’ve heard of such a breed.

He is very protective of family members. There are dog breeds that may not be very popular but are, nevertheless, the perfect fit for a certain type of family. I have letters from people who state that this dog has killed a snake that was about to bite a child, or kept the child from going out on the road where he would have been run over. The dogs have been known for saving peoples lives, and the cur dog would die for his master. The cur dog looks to their master for advice of what to do and what his master wants him to do, and he is there to please. They are used for rescue dogs also used on bear and mountain lion in New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, and Montana, as well as many different places through out the United States and Canada. They are one of the most protective dogs around your family, more especially children, they are a real obedient dog.

They are used for everything here in South MS squirrel, coon, bobcat, penning cattle and hogs. They are the most versatile dog that I know of in the world. We know that they have been bred from nothing but the best for that long, and probably a lot longer. They have been in my family of over 200 years. This line of black dogs are super tree dogs. Will they tree or do some folks just say that their dog will tree? Seeing is believing. LH Ladner from Southern Mississippi has propagated and hunted the Ladner Blackmouth Cur all his life. We also thank the many dedicated and long time hunting friends and Ladner Blackmouth Cur dog owners for the kindness they have shown our family during our time of bereavement. We extend a very special 'Thank You' to pastors Jesse Ladner (family) and Scott Young, a very close hunting friend for the wonderful service they delivered in memory of LH.
#CURR DOGS TREE IT ALL UPDATE#
We also plan to update this site soon in memory of our dad LH Ladner. In the meanwhile if you are interested in one of these pups or wish to discuss this breed you may reach Curt at 22. We plan to maintain his legacy with this breed going forward by updates to this web site with Curtis Ladner in mastering the original kennels. We regret to announce that our dad, LH Ladner passed away January 24 in his home with his daughters at his side and is now in the comfort of a new journey with the Lord.
